Canton Food Co. Exterior
Another Nom Nom field trip! I think I get to do the most interesting stuff for Nom Nom, more than any of my other businesses. Today Misa and I went to check out some Asian markets in search of a source of: head cheese, vietnamese “meat loaf”, and pickled veggies. First we stopped off at Bangkok Market in Hollywood since it was close by to where Misa just finished a casting call (totally looking like a model too…new haircut ftw!). There, we found some “meat loaf”, but not in a wholesale capacity. Then it was off to what we were really looking forward to, the “Chinese Costco”.
After braving through a random June rainstorm, we arrived in downtown LA, where Canton Food Co., the “Chinese Costco” was located. The place had even larger quantities than Costco, and was more like a storage depot for restaurants. It was pretty cool seeing the huge cases of…anything you would ever need for a restaurant I guess. Unfortunately, they didn’t have what we were looking for though. While they did have a lot of Asian ingredients in bulk, they didn’t have anything super crazy or out of the ordinary. They also didn’t have a fresh meat area, just frozen. We did manage to pick up a case of 100 veggie spring rolls for $23. They weren’t bad…maybe we can use those. I also got a 4 lb. bag of lemongrass for $2. That was pretty cool…
So we’re still looking for a place to get some of the “stranger” meats in a Banh Mi Dac Biet sandwich. I think we have a pickled veggie supplier, but it doesn’t hurt to keep looking around for that too. It seems like we may have to just buy the head cheese and meat loaf retail when we first start…
