Update on Projects

So things have been moving somewhat slowly as of late. I’m not sure if it’s because sometimes things just take longer than expected, laziness, or just a busy summer schedule. Probably a combination of all three. Thankfully, the busy summer schedule has finally slowed down. With only a short vacation in Hawaii on the horizon, I finally have more free time to dig my teeth into finalizing some of these new projects.

UpdateMeTee

This freakin t-shirt has taken so long to get going, but we’re finally just about there.  After countless samples, I’ve come to the realization the shirt cannot be perfect.  Unfortunately, we will not be able to create a shirt that you can write on and erase completely no matter what.  Due to the nature of the many materials we’ve used to create the “writable” surface, ink will always seep in and stain the surface if left on for extended periods of time.  However, this doesn’t mean the shirt won’t work.  People just have to erase their writing within a few days.  I don’t think that’s quite a deal-breaker.  The other problem is washing/drying the shirt.  It seems the shirt isn’t holding up very well in the washing machine.  Our printer is pretty surprised by this, and is going to run some tests.  Apparently the method/ink they’re using should hold up very very well, and they’ve never had any problems with it in the past.  I think the problem has something to do with the large amount of ink used for the light blue comment box, since that’s the only area giving us problems.  We’ll either fix the problem with the printer, or we’ll just have to have the shirts hand-wash only.  Again, not a deal-breaker…just kinda annoying.

Anyway, little problems aside, I still think it’s a cool shirt/idea.  I just ordered a small run of American Apparel shirts (about 500 total), and we’ll start printing on them once our printer is done looking into the problem I described above.  The site should be going up within a week or so, and then we’ll get going!  We’re about 3 weeks behind schedule, but it’s not the end of the world.  We’ll still catch back-to-school buyers.

Oh, and kudos to Misa for coming up with the name “UpdateMeTee”.  I really like it!  We actually have a little logo and placeholder site up for the time being at www.updatemetee.com.  You can see it there I guess.

Mini Steins

I received my mini stein samples about three weeks ago, but have just been sitting on them.  The samples look perfectly fine, but I’ve been hesitant to move forward on the project.  The main reason is I just bought a new car…cash…and now I’m not quite as liquid as before.  Since I’m already investing in UpdateMeTee right now, throwing another few thousand $$$ at Mini Steins wouldn’t exactly be ideal.  I also would prefer to launch with at least three different stein designs, as opposed to just one.  However, with the minimum order quantities I have purchase, I can’t afford/wouldn’t want to risk investing in three designs right off the bat.

Despite all the wishy-washyness, I actually just put in the order to move forward.  What finally pushed me to go for it was two of my entrepreneur group colleagues giving me a kick in the pants.  I had a meeting with them last Thursday and they just said to do it.  Good enough for me I guess.  =P

It’ll still be at least 2 months before the steins are done, so that gives me plenty of time to make a site, think of packaging, work on some collateral materials, contact potential wholesale customers… hmm, that should keep me busy.  Hopefully I’ll have everything in time for Oktoberfest celebrations.

Breakthrough! Status Update Shirts Back on Track!

It’s no secret that I’ve been having some trouble getting my “status update” shirts finalized.  I’ve had all kinds of problems trying to find the right material that a washable marker wouldn’t smudge on, yet still wipe off cleanly.  I hit another roadblock yesterday when I discovered the washable marker, when left on for a week, left a light trace after being washed off!  “Washable” indeed…  After going through four printers and a boatload of different types of markers, I was at my wits end.  Things were looking very bleak for the entire project.

But then a breakthrough occurred!  Last night, while buying some playing cards at Vons, I noticed a package of washable CRAYONS!  I grabbed them on a whim, figuring I may as well give it a shot and see if they worked.  This morning I did a little testing and found they worked out perfectly!  The crayons had zero smudging and washed off perfectly clean!  The only downside is they don’t write quite as well as a marker, but that’s to be expected.  It’s still early, and I have a lot more testing to do, but I think I finally have a winner!  Thank God things are finally looking up, because I was getting kinda down about the whole project after so many setbacks.  I’m feeling good about this one though.

Mini Beer Stein Shot Glasses

changed measurements slightly since making this...

I’ve had this idea for a while now, but only now am starting to move on it.  I’m creating a shot glass that looks like a beer stein.  Simple.

The thought is a beer stein shot glass would make a good gift, especially for college-age binge drinkers who love drink-ware.  We’ve all been there at some point…cool flasks, LED shot glasses, some sort of bottle opener built into your belt, ring or sandals.  There’s definitely a market for that sorta thing.  Combine that with the popularity of Oktoberfest, a slam dunk holiday for the beer stein shot glass, and you’ve got a winner (right?)!

Whether its going to be popular or not, I figure I may as well give it a try.  I found an overseas manufacturer that makes beer steins, so I’m talking with them now to just shrink one down for me.  I’ll have to create a custom mold for them, but since the manufacturer seems to specialize in steins, it shouldn’t be too hard for them to work something out.  They already have small pewter lids that seem like they’ll fit perfectly, so all that remains is making the stein part.  I should have them to market by August or September, just in time for Oktoberfest!

Beard Head Packaging Nearly Done

Went down to Ace Commercial Printing today to check out a sample my friend and fellow entrepreneur, Ozzie, had come up with for the new Beard Head retail packaging.  It turned out great!  In fact, we even made a few changes to it while there to make it even better!  We noticed the eyes were getting a little too covered by the cap, so we cut an extra flap into the cardboard that would prop up the “brim” of the Beard Head, allowing the eyes to be more visible.  I just need to alter the artwork slightly, grab some sort of fastener that will clamp the top, add a hook/hanger to the top, and we’re set!  I’m loving this new packaging…

New Status Shirt Printer…Works Great!

I discussed having some trouble with ink smudging on the status update shirts recently.  I went out and found a new printer to see if they could solve the problem.  Today I got back some sample printing types (pictured) and one of them worked really REALLY well!  As it turns out, one of the printing types can be used with wet erase makers, which write MUCH better than washable markers and have ZERO smudge!  I’m pretty excited about the new printing!  I’ve got about a week before some actual sample shirts will be completed, when I can really put the shirt to the test, but samples so far have shown some great results.  Very good news today.  Stay tuned for an update next week on how the new sample shirt turns out!

Social Networking Shirt Problems (UPDATE)

I went down to our printer to discuss the smudging problem I posted about earlier. We tried a few different types of printing processes and materials, but we were unable to produce a shirt that didn’t smudge AND was erasable. If we can’t fix the printing, my next thought would be to try to change the ink. Perhaps if we could find a different type of marker, we would be able to get the results we wanted. So today I headed out to an art store to pick up some pens. My hope was there would be a variety of different types of “washable” markers, each with a slightly different formula, one potentially working perfectly. What I found was just the same Crayola washable markers, and a bunch of non-washable markers. I picked up a few anyway, and started doing some tests.

As it turns out, nothing really works well. The dry-erase doesn’t come out at all…works like a permanent marker. The wet-erase looks great, but when I tried to erase it, it left a pretty visible trace on the shirt.  The trace didn’t come off with water, soap and water, Mr. Clean magic sponge, nor a ride in the washing machine.  Washable markers work fine, but they smudge.  Fabric mate smudges and leaves a trace almost as bad as the wet-erase.  Water-based marker basically worked the same as the washable marker…makes me think they’re probably the same thing, just named differently.

So where does that leave us?  None of the markers except the washable seems to work.  But the washable marker smudges too easily.  At this point, our current shirt isn’t going to work.  Since there is a shirt/printing process already out on the market that can produce the effect we want, I know it’s possible. Unfortunately, it seems that this particular printer won’t be able to do it. Kinda annoying, but it seems we’ll have to find a new printer.

Social Networking Shirt Problem

After a few days of wearing the new social networking shirt around, I’ve found the ink smudges too easily. Initially, I thought the smudging problem would only be limited to people touching the shirt, which, while annoying, could be avoided rather easily. In other words…not a deal breaker. However, after wearing the shirt in my car, I noticed that my seat belt crossed right over the “writable” area and tended to smudge the ink quite a bit. That’s definitely no good! I don’t think we can sell the shirt in its current easily-smudgeable-by-a-seat-belt-state.

So now we have to find a solution. Next step is to test another “writable” shirt that I bought online. If it easily smudges too, we may have a problem. We also can try different markers, slight variations to the washable marker, slight variations to the printing process to make it a little less glossy…definitely a few things that still need to be played with. Hopefully we can find a solution quickly!

New Social Networking Shirts!

About a month ago, I had a neat idea for a shirt where you can stick a social networking-esque status update on it. Originally, the thought was to have a sticker that you can print out and slap onto a shirt. However, as I started looking further in to how to execute the idea, I came across a type of printing that could be written on and erased with “washable” markers. Washable markers are like dry-erase markers, but wash off even easier. Anyway… I started work on a design, found a good printer, and chose a t-shirt blank that I liked. Now, about a month later, I’ve got my first samples! They look pretty good, but I’m not 100% on the shirt. I may try a few different samples to see if they fit/look better. These Gildan 64000 shirts were supposed to be really similar to American Apparel (but cheaper), but they don’t have the same weight or thickness to them.

I’m a little worried about the marker smudging easily.  Fortunately, if the marker does smudge on to something else, it washes off very easily (which is why they’re called “washable” markers).  But I found it somewhat difficult to cleanly wash off a message without getting a little smudge on the shirt.  I could do it, but I had to be a little careful…which is a pain.

Next step is to finalize the shirt style, find a marker supplier, do a run of a few hundred shirts, set up a website, and then start getting buzz and get to selling!  Ah, this is my favorite part of starting up new businesses.  Should be a fun few months.

Anyway, stay tuned for updates on how the new venture goes!

Beard Head Facebook Contest & Fans Worth

I ran a giveaway on Facebook yesterday, awarding our Facebook fans/friends for tagging us in a status update.  We got about 70 tags in a few hours, countless comments, and a lot of brand/product awareness!  The prize was three Beard Heads, given away to three random friends who tagged us!  All in all, it was a successful little giveaway.  We had a lot of happy customers, lots of people having fun with coming up with creative ways to tag us, and some funny little interactions between us and our fans.

Interesting note on Facebook fans and friends.  Mashable.com had an interesting article today highlighting a new study that values Facebook fans at $3.60 each.  That’s only FANS!  I imagine Facebook FRIENDS are even more valuable!  As of right now, we have more than 1,100 friends!  =D  I think we got around 40 or 50 new friends after this last little contest, so one could argue that we created at least $150 in brand value for a much smaller investment (3 Beard Heads, some time).  Neat!

Beard Head Retail Packaging

One of my goals is to get Beard Head in more retail locations in 2010.  To do this, we’ll need proper retail packaging.  As it stands right now, we hand over our Beard Heads individually wrapped in plastic bags.  That works just fine when we ship to our customers, but a shop owner won’t be able to display the Beard Head very well.  Since the cap doesn’t really look all that special without an actual head in it, I think it’s important to give a potential customer some sort of visual cue as to what the cap will look like when put on.  Using an actual mannequin head would be ideal, but not very practical.  After all, a shop owner most likely wouldn’t have the space to display multiple mannequin heads…nor would I want to provide mannequin heads to all my wholesale customers.  The solution?  Yesterday I started messing around with the idea of using a cardboard insert with a face design to fit in the Beard Head cap.  I grabbed a USPS flat rate envelope (thin cardboard…perfect material), cut it up, and drew on it.  As it turns out, it worked perfectly!  Much better than I could have imagined for a first try!  Check out the pic!

The cardboard insert slips inside, but wraps around the back and over the top (all one piece).  This will give us an area to write a product description (or whatever we want), put a barcode, and display our logo.  The top part that folds over is also a perfect place to stick a little hanger so we can put it on any rack!  I was quite pleased with the result, to say the least.

Today, I created a more official vector version of the insert in Fireworks (I don’t have Adobe Illustrator right now…).  The first “ghetto” version (pictured above) was made really quickly, and I kinda just drew the face without much thought, trying to just to get something on there for reference.   However, I ended up really liking the way the little guy looked, so I basically recreated the face almost exactly.  Now I just need to get some sort of description to put on the back and I’ve got a completed template!  I’m not sure where I’m going to get the thing printed yet, but I’ll find something.  I imagine I’ll get them printed, constructed, and inserted in China through our Beard Head manufacturer.  That way, we’ll get the completed product when they arrive here in the U.S. with no extra work on our part!

Clever Crackpot 2.0

A lot has happened since my last post, and I think now is a good time to start blogging again.  In the past several months, I sold PokerBling.com and left Nom Nom Truck.  I’m working on a few new projects, which should be fun to post about as they progress.  Stay tuned for more updates!

PokerBling Update

slice1

PokerBling, while not nearly as busy as Beard Head or Nom Nom Truck, is still truckin’ along!  As I mentioned in my “I’m Back” post earlier, I’m currently waiting for my new bracelet design to finish up and ship.  I think it’s going to arrive in about a week!  I’ll also be getting a restock of all my current bracelet styles, which are quickly selling out.  In addition to the new bracelet design, I’m also in the process of scrubbing my finances so I can sell the business.  While I’m not 100% that I’m going to sell…or the business will sell in the current economic climate for that matter…I am currently shopping PokerBling.com around to potential buyers via an online business marketplace.  I’ve already received several inquiries for more information, and have had a couple follow up calls.  Right now everyone is just waiting on the books to be completed so they can get a better look at the finances.

Until I get the new bracelet design in, I think it’s going to be pretty quiet for PokerBling.com.  Once the new bracelets arrive, I’ll have to get new product shots, a new sell-sheet, contact blogs and poker-related Web sites, reconnect with wholesale accounts, and redo the Web page to include the new products.  Good thing that isn’t for another week…  =P

Beard Head Team Athletes

arty_hong

One of the fun things I’ve implemented over the past one or two weeks for Beard Head has been our “Athletes” page.  I haven’t quite updated the page completely yet…it only has one person on there right now…but we have about four or five other athletes that we’ve agreed to “sponsor” with free product and extra exposure on our Web site!  We’ve got a wide range of athletes, including cyclers, snow boarders, mma fighters, runners and ATVers!  The thought is we would get extra exposure in a wide range of communities, with Beard Head being represented by committed, energetic and charismatic people!  In the end, we only give away some free product, which doesn’t cost us all that much.  We get to have fun, our athletes have fun…everyone is happy!

Beard Head Update

fun_2

As I mentioned in my earlier “I’m back” post, Beard Head has been pretty busy recently.  Now that its getting colder and winter is almost here, interest in our Beard Head knit caps has definitely picked up!  We got a few pretty sweet media hits, many of them overseas, so our international orders are up.  We’ve also gotten a number of requests from international distributors interested in carrying our stuff, but nothing has panned out yet (aside from our UK distributor, who we’ve been working with for awhile).  We also got a great domestic mention in a popular blog, www.gearjunkie.com, which is run by one of our fans over at Mammoth Mtn.  As it turns out, a lot of people happen to read the blog and have contacted us or bought Beard Heads!  We’ve actually gotten a lot of interest from other media outlets and retail stores looking to buy wholesale!  Very nice hit indeed!

We’re actually running very low on a lot of our Beard Head styles since we’ve been getting so much business recently.  Luckily we already had a production order in the works, which is actually set to arrive (it’s already done now) by November 10!  Its excruciating waiting for the shipment to come in, but there’s not much else I can do.  In addition to getting all our old styles back in stock, we’re also getting three new color styles!  Hopefully they sell well!

I’m Back!

2356i_m_back

Wow, so I took a pretty long break from posting on my blog.  I really haven’t had that much time over the past month or two since Nom Nom Truck launched, so I’ve completely neglected CleverCrackpot.com.  One of the original reasons for starting this blog was a way for me to keep on task by posting updates on my progress for certain businesses.  Since being productive hasn’t really been a problem for me recently, I figured I didn’t need to make any updates to CleverCrackpot.com.  However, I think it would be nice to make periodic updates here about my businesses, so I’ll do my best moving forward.

So my last blog post was August 31st…two months ago!  A lot has happened since then, most notably the rise of Nom Nom Truck!  In addition to the truck, Beard Head has also been very busy now that winter is approaching, and PokerBling.com is starting to get a little more busy since the new bracelet design is set to arrive shortly.  I am also in the process of preparing the business to be sold…or at least shopping it around a bit.

In any case, I’m busy as ever!  I’m probably working anywhere from 60-75 hours/week right now, which is just about right.  Here’s hoping all the hard work will pay off and I’ll be able to take a nice long 3 year vacation!
